It was the late 1800s in St. Louis and times were extraordinarily difficult. The city was stricken with multiple illnesses of epidemic proportions. Typhoid fever, smallpox, scarlet fever, measles, tuberculosis and diphtheria were widespread. Selflessly, Mother Mary Odilia Berger and the Sisters of Mary, in an effort to bring mercy and care to the sick, traveled house-to-house carrying an old wicker basket containing food and medicine. All were welcome to take from the basket, while those that could were encouraged to add to the basket as a way of sharing their good fortune.
Creating a Foundation for the Future
What Mother Mary Odilia and the Sisters of Mary couldn't have known back then is that their efforts would become the inspirational basis for the founding of SSM St. Mary's Health Center Foundation in 1990. In the same tradition of giving and receiving, SSM St. Mary's Health Center Foundation brings support to the patients, programs and services of St. Mary's Health Center through charitable giving.
SSM St. Mary's Health Center Foundation is committed entirely to those who receive and give care at St. Mary's Health Center. Through the generosity of our donors, we are able to support the Health Center in its efforts to provide exceptional health care to the St. Louis bi-state region and surrounding communities.
